Keighley station reopening

£9.9m station transformation ushers in a new era for Keighley rail users

Train operator Northern has welcomed a £9.9million investment in Keighley’s Grade II-listed rail station.

The opening of the revitalised station marks a major milestone for the town, creating a modern, accessible, and welcoming transport hub that will play a vital role in driving local economic growth and supporting communities across the region.

Delivered in partnership with Network Rail and the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway (KWVR), the upgrade presented numerous logistical and operational challenges, including the manufacture and installation of hand-built timber frames, replacement of old cast iron drainpipes with matching designs made of aluminium, and the rebuilding of historic chimneys brick by brick.

The project has included:

  • complete refurbishment of the station forecourt, frontage, waiting room, footbridges, drainage and masonry
  • repair and renewal of timber in the ramps and roofs across the premises – including stabilising the café’s gable end
  • extensive structural strengthening, including work to allow the western elevation link bridge to reopen
  • masonry and drainage repairs to the western corner at the Skipton end of the station car park

The cross-industry project team brought together community representatives and students from Keighley College, to ensure that young people are aware of the benefits the revitalised station has brought to the community and the impact the improved facilities will have on the local economy.

Kerry Peters, regional director for Northern, said: “The completion of this multi-million pound project will be much welcomed by the more than 1.5m people that use Keighley station to board one of our services.”

“The station is looking better than ever and is a transport hub the town can be proud of for many years to come.”

Northern is the second largest train operator in the UK, with 2,500 services a day to more than 500 stations across the North of England.
