Redcar in Bloom After Community Work

Teesside station receives flower baskets after National Citizen Service scheme visit

Northern, part of the Arriva group, has had a station spruce-up following a visit from teenagers on the National Citizen Service (NCS) scheme.

Redcar Central, on the Tees Valley Line in North Yorkshire, received a day’s work from the youngsters, who cleared away weeds and created some attractive new flower baskets, including a novel design representing a colourful train.

The NCS is a government-backed programme which encourages young people to do voluntary work in the community in order to help them develop skills for the future. However, it is rare for them to work on a railway station.

The work on the station is much appreciated by Northern, particularly the station staff at Redcar Central.

Pete Myers, Northern’s Stakeholder Manager in the North East, said “Redcar Central really appreciated the much-needed TLC, as weeds have been an on-going problem. Northern can clear them and we do, but the NCS volunteers did it so much better and have truly made a difference in their community.”
