Northern targets road users with hundreds of free train tickets during morning commute

Commuters on one of the busiest routes into Manchester city centre are in with a chance of bagging a pair of free train tickets this morning.

The train operator Northern has unveiled a billboard on Oxford Road featuring hundreds of ‘tearaway’ tickets which are valid for two people to anywhere on the Northern network.

The offer is part of Northern’s new ‘Try The Train’ campaign, which also includes a new TV advert that broadcast for the first time last week.

The billboard is located under the railway bridge, just after the junction of Oxford Road and New Wakefield Street, opposite the Kimpton Clocktower Hotel.

Those that miss out on one of the free tickets will have two weeks (until Monday, 19 February 2024) to redeem tickets at 50%-off the regular price using a special QR code on the billboard.

Mark Powles, commercial and customer director for Northern, said: “Our new ‘Try The Train’ campaign is ‘exactly what it says on the tin’.

“We want to encourage people that don’t normally use the train to give us a go, be that for the commute, a night out or weekend away.

“The ‘tearaway’ tickets are on a ‘first come, first serve’ basis, so anyone interested will need to act fast – but we hope the 50%-off will be a nice consolation prize for those that miss out.”

Northern is the second largest train operator in the UK, with 2,500 services a day to more than 500 stations across the North of England.
