Northern secures Carillion jobs

  • Customer service and facilities management jobs secured

Northern has secured 240 jobs from collapsed Carillion by bringing its Customer Experience Centre in-house and through securing a new contract with facilities management provider ISS.

The customer excellence team, based in Sheffield, supports both Northern’s and Grand Central’s passenger operations and 40 colleagues will transfer across from Carillion to become permanent employees of Northern or Grand Central. This transfer will take place over the next few weeks following colleague consultation.

Carillion was also responsible for maintaining and cleaning Northern’s 477 stations at the same time as Northern invests £30m in new facilities for customers at those stations.  The station maintenance and cleaning programme is delivered by around 200 colleagues, who will transfer to become permanent ISS employees following consultation.  ISS has been awarded an initial 12 month contract during which time Northern will assess its long-term needs on facilities management with a view to putting in place a long-term plan.

Notes to editors

  • Northern and Grand Central are both part of Arriva Trains UK.
  • The customer service centre based in Sheffield serves both Northern and Grand Central customer service operations. The 40 colleagues will be transferred to Northern (30) and Grand Central (10) following a formal colleague consultation process.
  • The facilities management contract with Carillion will be moved to ISS under a new 12 month contract. The 200 colleagues working for Carillion on this contract will move to ISS, subject to consultation.
  • PWC are liquidators for Carillion and have been managing these contracts on behalf of Northern and Grand Central since the liquidation was announced in January.
