Modern ticketing technology arrives at Salford Crescent

Northern launches new gateline for Greater Manchester

Northern, the UK’s largest train operator outside London has celebrated opening its third ticket gateline since the start of its new and transformational franchise in April.

The gateline at Salford Crescent in Greater Manchester came into operation on Monday 7 November, following similar technology being launched at Liverpool Lime Street and Wigan Wallgate in September.

The ticket gates are part of a £1 billion investment to transform and modernise Northern, helping improve security and encouraging all its customers to hold a valid ticket before they board trains.

Cubic Transportation Systems (CTS), a business unit of Cubic Corporation, supplied the technology for the ticket gates. CTS has already completed the installation of the first new barriers at Liverpool Lime Street and Wigan Wallgate. Five more Northern managed stations will benefit along with Salford Crescent including Bolton, Blackburn, Bradford Forster Square, Halifax and Harrogate.

All are scheduled to be completed by Spring 2017.

Alex Hynes, Managing Director for Northern, said “We are delighted to open the gateline at Salford Central. Gateline technology is another important step towards modernising how Northern operates and will in the long run, improve our customers’ journeys. Ticket gates help manage customer flows through stations at peak times. They also help us reduce the number of customers travelling without a ticket, improve security and also discourage anti-social behaviour.”

“We are proud to have been entrusted with this important contract for Northern,” said Roger Crow, Executive Vice President and Managing Director for Cubic Transportation Systems Europe. “We delivered the first stations in record time, thanks to a true team effort, and we’re looking forward to delivering the remaining stations in an equally efficient manner.”

NOTES TO EDITORS:

To pass through the gatelines, customers are reminded to have a valid ticket for travel. Tickets can be purchased on Northern’s website, via Northern’s mobile app, on a self-service ticket vending machine or at any ticket office.

Ticket gates can capture your ticket if you have completed your journey. If you need proof of purchase please make sure you ask for a receipt when you purchase your ticket. All retail locations can provide this upon request.
