Impact on Northern services following Manchester Arena incident

Following the tragic event at Manchester Arena earlier this week, and the subsequent closure of Manchester Victoria station, there has been a significant impact on Northern’s services in the Greater Manchester region.

We are doing everything we can to maintain service levels, but while Manchester Victoria remains closed, there will unfortunately be ongoing disruption to services in the Greater Manchester area and for train services that would normally operate through or from this station.

Liam Sumpter, regional director, said: “Manchester Victoria is a crucial part of the rail network and, with the track unavailable to us, it is extremely difficult to get our trains and the extra carriages we could otherwise utilise, where they need to be.

“As a result we are experiencing short notice delays and cancellations across our network whilst we work to get our trains – even on services which would not ordinarily call at, or travel though, Victoria.

“This is an unprecedented time for the rail network in the north of England and, as Greater Manchester Police and British Transport Police continue their vital and painstaking work at Manchester Victoria, we are asking our customers to continue displaying patience and understanding.

“We are doing everything possible to continue to provide as resilient as rail service as we can and will work as quickly as possible to return services to normal operation once Victoria is open. “However, further alterations to services across the region should be expected until Manchester Victoria is fully reopened.”
