Economists at Northern using new data intelligence tool to better understand businesses and their employees across the region
Northern has signed-up to the data intelligence platform Growth Flag to help better understand the transport needs of businesses and their employees across the North of England.
The software will also help the train operator gain an insight into the supply chains of businesses that work for the rail industry and those based in and around its station premises.
The first-of-its-kind tool was developed by the social enterprise firm Growth Company and the data intelligence platform, Red Flag Alert and is one of a range of data sources and surveys Northern uses to understand potential customers and what might encourage them to travel by train.
Rob Warnes, strategic development director at Northern, said: “This partnership with Growth Flag is an important step in our long-term vision to make a positive impact for the North in all we do and for all we serve.
“Using their extensive data intelligence, we can better prepare for the future and prioritise business activity in areas where growth potential is best. Just like our drivers, we need to know what’s coming further down the track.”
Richard Jeffery, founder partner of Growth Flag, said: “Growth Flag brings together Red Flag Alert’s background in data insights, with the Growth Company’s expertise in delivering inclusive and environmentally sustainable growth.
"The tool offers a unique opportunity for businesses to gain an in-depth understanding of where growth is taking place across the UK, highlighting opportunities in areas that may not have been previously considered.
“This is a very exciting partnership, and we look forward to supporting Northern to incorporate this insight into its vision and strategy going forward.”
Public sector organisations across the North of England such as Local and Combined Authorities, Local Enterprise Partnerships (LEPs), as well as colleges and universities are also using Growth Flag to understand their local economy and support growth sectors.
Northern is the second largest train operator in the UK, with 2,500 services a day to more than 500 stations across the North of England.
Northern is owned by Northern Trains Ltd, a subsidiary of the Department for Transport’s public sector owning group, ‘DOHL.’ DOHL has responsibility for three rail companies, LNER, Northern Trains Limited and SE Trains ('Southeastern'). DOHL is committed to working closely with all aspects of the rail industry to ensure the continued provision of critical passenger rail services.
