Cumbrian station given resurfacing revamp by Northern
One of Northern’s Cumbrian stations has been transformed thanks to an overhaul of its car park.
Passengers using Sellafield station will see significant improvements now resurfacing work has been completed by Northern.
In addition to resurfacing work, the layout of the car park has been changed to improve safety for pedestrians and drivers. The redesign ensures that pedestrian walkways and bays for vehicles are clearly marked.
The project, funded by Sellafield Ltd, took two days to complete.
The improvements come as part of Northern’s wider programme of transformation across the rail network. The – A Better Way to Go - highlights the work being done by the train operator to improve every step of the customer journey.
Chris Jackson, regional director at Northern, said: "This investment is another example of the work being done by Northern to improve the journey experience of passengers and will make a significant difference to our customers.”
“We are working hard to make sure our stations are safe, accessible and welcoming places for customers and even small changes – like resurfacing - can make a big difference.
“Our A Better Way to Go campaign demonstrates the hard work that has taken place as we continue to transform rail travel in the north and I’d like to thank everyone who has been involved.”
Mike White, head of infrastructure for Sellafield Ltd, said: “We’re pleased to support Northern in making these important improvements to the Sellafield station.
“Investment in our railway infrastructure encourages more people to use the line, improving the viability of local services and benefiting our communities and the environment.
“The resurfacing work will create a safer area for station users, including pedestrians travelling to the Sellafield site.”
The campaign, which will be seen in stations, on-trains and online, will also cover improvements such as:
- New fleet made up of 101 trains
- Another 240 trains have been fully refurbished
- Industry leading mobility scooter policy
- Roll-out of more bodycam units for station staff
- Improved CCTV onboard and in stations
As part of the campaign, Northern has launched an online tool allowing people to find out what improvements have been made to their local station. The tool can be found at https://www.northernrailway.co.uk/better
