Blackpool South on track to reopen next week

The railway between Blackpool South and Preston is on track to reopen as planned on Monday (29 January) as the first phase of Blackpool’s railway revolution is completed.

The route between Preston and Blackpool was shut in November to allow major upgrade work to take place as part of the multi-billion pound Great North Rail Project. The improvements include a new modern signalling system, better track layout and electrification to Blackpool North which allow greener, quieter and more reliable trains to run.

Work to upgrade and electrify Blackpool North line will continue into the spring while the remaining overhead equipment, tracks, drainage and signalling equipment is installed.

Sharon Keith, Regional Director for Northern, said: “This is great news for our customers in and around Blackpool and we look forward to welcoming them back onto the railway on Monday.

“The completion of the work on this line is a landmark moment and I’d like to thank our customers for the patience they have shown during the engineering work.”
