Better Stations coming to Northern network - Cattal and Ravensthorpe

Better Stations are on their way across the Northern network

As part of an ambitious modernisation plan Northern is committed to bringing improvements to our stations during the next three years.

This programme will see a combination of new or refurbished shelters and waiting rooms, refurbished toilets, new seating, new ticket vending machines, improved security and lighting and accessibility improvements installed at all stations managed by Northern.

The first chance to see some of these features will come next month (April) when work starts at five trial stations at Cattal, Ravensthorpe, Moston, Adlington and Cramlington where we will be installing a selection of waiting shelters, customer information points, benches and samples of the waiting shelter refurbishment we will be undertaking.

Paul Barnfield, Regional Director (East) for Northern, said: “The work at Cattal and Ravensthorpe will give our customers in Yorkshire the chance to see some of the proposed new features actually out there on the network.

“Cattal will benefit from the replacement of the existing waiting shelters, as well as new seating, whilst customers at Ravensthorpe will get fully refurbished waiting shelters as well as improved customer information. We want people to be able to see – and experience – the proposed improvements rather than just hear about them.

“Most importantly, we want to know what our customers think before we commit to rolling out these and other improvements at all stations across the north of England.”

The features installed throughout March and April will not be the final versions, and Northern is calling on as many customers as possible to visit the test stations and provide feedback on the new equipment.

Paul added: “We have a number of options in terms of the improvements we can make to our stations and we want to ensure that we give our customers a voice and take their insight into account when we make final decisions. We want to prove that we are listening to the people that matter the most to us.”

Work is scheduled to begin at the trial stations March and should be completed in early April.

Having taken on the franchise in April last year, Northern has begun developing extremely ambitious plans and are in the very early stages of a significant programme of modernisation which, as well as improvements at our stations, will also see the introduction of 281 new carriages, the removal of Pacers by the end of 2019, and the full refurbishment of the remaining fleet.

Details of the work to be carried out at the trial stations is as follows:

Moston (Greater Manchester) – Replacement of existing waiting shelters and provision of new seating

Adlington (Lancashire) – Replacement of existing waiting shelters. One will feature customer information, green roofing and seating and one will incorporate rainwater capture technology and seating.

Ravensthorpe (West Yorkshire) – Refurbishment of existing waiting shelters to create a more welcoming waiting environment and installation of a sample customer information screen.

Cramlington (Northumberland) – Refurbishment of existing waiting shelter and provision of replacement waiting shelter incorporating a customer information screen.

Cattal (North Yorkshire) - Replacement of existing waiting shelters and provision of new seating.
